In a significant legal development, the Uttarakhand High Court has granted bail to Abdul Malik, the prime accused in the February 8 Haldwani violence case. Malik faced allegations under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act following the unrest in Haldwani during an anti-encroachment drive.

The bail was granted by a division bench comprising Justice Alok Verma and Justice Alok Mehra, who considered the defense's argument that Malik was not present at the site during the incident. The bench clarified that the decision to grant bail should not be interpreted as an acquittal.

The court's decision comes after Malik spent over two years in custody. The trial will now proceed, focusing on evidence and witness testimonies. The violence resulted in multiple injuries and damage to public property, with numerous FIRs filed in its aftermath.
