A company that had been embroiled in a legal dispute with Facebook content moderators in Kenya announced that it would lay off over 1,000 employees. This follows Facebook's parent company, Meta, terminating its contract amid ongoing court cases concerning worker conditions.
The content moderators previously accused both Sama, the local contractor, and Meta of underpaying and failing to provide sufficient mental health support. As a result, Sama shifted its business model to focus on AI data labeling.
Despite Sama's defense, the lawsuit, which seeks USD 1.6 billion in compensation, highlights disturbing grievances over gruelling work, including moderators encountering distressing content without adequate mental health resources.
