South African Arrest of Activist Kemi Seba Sparks International Tensions

South African police apprehended prominent pan-African and pro-Russian activist Kemi Seba, who is sought by Benin authorities for supporting an attempted coup. Seba, 45, was arrested in Pretoria along with his son and a South African citizen, as extradition proceedings commence.

The arrest warrant for Seba, issued by Benin in 2025, accuses him of inciting rebellion after he endorsed a coup attempt that was subsequently thwarted. Having primarily stayed underground since the coup failed, the activist remains unreachable for comment.

Seba, born Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi in France, had his French nationality revoked and is a known critic of Western influence in West Africa. Allegations suggest Seba was aided by a South African for a fee to travel to Europe. Police seized significant funds during the arrest.
