The World Bank, along with several top development lenders, has announced a new global effort called Water Forward. Launched on Wednesday, this initiative aims to enhance secure water access for a billion people in the next four years, focusing on strategic investments in water management.
Ajay Banga, the head of the World Bank, emphasized the economic significance of water, noting that reliable water services are essential for functioning economies. The initiative aims to mobilize both private and public funding, in light of predictions that demand for freshwater could exceed supply by up to 40% by 2030.
Participating development banks, including the European Investment Bank and the Asian Development Bank, are targeting 14 countries in water-stressed regions. Their projects will address key issues such as urban leakage, irrigation modernization, and expanding wastewater reuse, all critical as climate change exacerbates water scarcity challenges worldwide.
