In a landmark case, Arman Khatri, a student at IIT Bombay, has been charged with abetting the suicide of his fellow student, Darshan Solanki. This week, additional sessions judge G G Bhansali framed the charges against Khatri under the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Atrocities Act, despite Khatri's plea of not guilty.
Darshan Solanki, a first-year BTech (Chemical) student, met a tragic end in February 2023 after allegedly jumping from the seventh floor of his hostel building post semester exams. A note discovered later blamed Khatri for Solanki's demise. A special investigation team of the Mumbai Police subsequently arrested Khatri on April 9, 2023, for abetment to suicide and criminal intimidation.
The case unveiled disturbing details, including a communal remark made by Solanki to Khatri, which allegedly led to a threatening encounter involving a paper cutter. As per police reports, Solanki's fear heightened, sending an apologetic WhatsApp message to Khatri, stating his intent to leave Mumbai.
