President Murmu Urges Compassion, Innovation and Ethical Practice at AIIMS Nagpur Convocation

Emphasising the critical role of compassion and ethical responsibility in healthcare, President of India Smt Droupadi Murmu addressed the convocation ceremony of AIIMS Nagpur, calling upon young medical professionals to uphold humanity, innovation and lifelong learning as the cornerstones of their profession.

In a deeply reflective and forward-looking address, the President highlighted that medicine is not merely a career but a lifelong commitment to serving humanity with empathy and dedication. She underscored that doctors play a dual role—not only treating diseases but also instilling hope and emotional strength in patients and their families.

"Medicine is Service, Not Just a Profession"

Addressing graduating students, Smt Murmu stressed that empathy and sensitivity are essential qualities for doctors, especially in challenging clinical situations. She noted that the reassurance and guidance offered by doctors often become a source of strength for families navigating health crises.

She also emphasized the importance of mutual respect between patients and healthcare providers, stating that trust is the foundation of an effective doctor-patient relationship—one that must be preserved and strengthened at all times.

Linking healthcare to national development, the President highlighted that a healthy population is fundamental to India's progress. She noted that over the past decade, the Government of India has taken significant steps to expand healthcare access and strengthen medical infrastructure across the country.

In this context, she pointed to the rapid expansion of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as a transformative initiative. She commended AIIMS Nagpur for emerging as a leading centre for medical education, research, and advanced healthcare services within a short span of time.

Technology as a Force Multiplier in Healthcare

The President drew attention to the ongoing global transformation in healthcare driven by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, digital health platforms, and advanced biomedical research.

She urged young doctors and institutions to embrace these innovations, particularly to address disparities between rural and urban healthcare systems. Leveraging technology, she noted, will be key to ensuring equitable access to quality medical services across India.

She also acknowledged AIIMS Nagpur's efforts in integrating modern technologies into healthcare delivery and research, positioning it as a forward-looking institution in India's medical landscape.

Highlighting the high social standing and trust enjoyed by doctors, the President reminded graduates of their moral responsibility to always prioritise patient welfare above all else. She stressed that ethical values, integrity, and a patient-centric approach must remain non-negotiable, regardless of technological advancements.

Encouraging a spirit of continuous learning, she noted that curiosity and innovation are essential for progress in medical science. She urged young doctors to actively engage in research, explore new solutions, and remain committed to lifelong learning.

"Technology can advance healthcare, but it can never replace compassion and integrity," she remarked, reinforcing the human element at the heart of medicine.

Concluding her address, President Murmu described the medical profession as a rare privilege—an opportunity to serve humanity in its most vulnerable moments. She encouraged graduates to take pride in this responsibility and carry it forward with dedication and sensitivity.
