Britain Entices AI Firm Anthropic Amid U.S.-UK Tug of War
Britain is attempting to persuade AI company Anthropic to increase its operations in the UK. This comes amidst a dispute with the U.S. Defense Department over the AI app Claude. The UK plans to offer various incentives, including a dual stock listing, as Anthropic faces legal challenges in the U.S.
Britain is making efforts to lure artificial intelligence firm Anthropic to expand its presence in the country, as reported by the Financial Times on Sunday. The move is part of a broader strategy to exploit tensions between Anthropic, the developer of AI application Claude, and the U.S. Defense Department.
According to sources familiar with the plans, the British government is considering proposals that range from expanding Anthropic's office in London to offering a dual stock listing. Inquiries made by Reuters to Anthropic and the UK's Department of Science, Innovation and Technology were not immediately answered.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer's office supports these initiatives, which will be presented to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei in late May. This follows the U.S. government's decision to blacklist Anthropic over concerns related to national security, a decision that is currently under judicial review.
