The Election Commission announced Thursday that it has adjudicated around 52 lakh cases in West Bengal, as part of the eighth supplementary list process. Expecting completion within four days, officials from the Chief Electoral Officer's office have already removed 35 to 40 percent of names from the rolls.
Judicial officers, following Supreme Court directives, are overseeing the verification. The urgency stems from upcoming elections, with voting slated to begin on April 23 and nominations closing on April 6. Completion is critical before freezing the electoral rolls.
Concerns about security for officers have risen after an incident in Malda's Kaliachak, where officers were confined. Authorities assure steps are being taken to protect the officers. Individuals not listed must seek tribunal assistance, although tribunal timelines remain unclear.
