China intensified its diplomatic push for a ceasefire in the Middle East and safer navigation through the Strait of Hormuz during discussions with Western officials on Thursday, aiming to stabilize the disrupted global energy market.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the urgent need for a collective effort to halt the ongoing war in the region during separate calls with EU's chief diplomat Kaja Kallas and Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. He highlighted that halting hostilities is crucial for ensuring the safe passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to the Chinese foreign ministry.
China has criticized the U.S.-Israeli military actions against Iran as breaches of international law, urging an immediate cessation to avoid further escalations involving Iran and other Gulf nations. Wang pressed for the sovereignty and civilian safety in the Gulf, while also calling on the U.S., Israel, and Iran to engage in dialogue towards achieving a peace settlement.
