A Ukrainian military draft officer was tragically killed in Lviv on Thursday, authorities reported, highlighting the growing unrest surrounding the country's mobilization strategy in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
An unknown local individual carried out the fatal stabbing and then fled the scene, said the National Police. The draft officer succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The suspect, identified as a customs inspector, has been apprehended, while the motive remains unclear.
In 2025, over 6,000 complaints related to the mobilization process were logged, including allegations of abuse by draft officers, according to the human rights ombudsman. With the system under scrutiny, Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has vowed to prioritize reforming the mobilization process.
