On Thursday, the Indian Parliament approved a bill to recognize Amaravati as the exclusive and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh, following a voice vote affirmation by the Rajya Sabha. Except for the YSRCP, all parties supported the legislation.
The bill seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, as per the state's assembly's request. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai expressed hopes for Andhra Pradesh's progress with Amaravati as its capital by June 2, 2024, contributing to India's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Supporters praised Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, highlighting Amaravati's potential economic benefits. However, YSRCP MP Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy opposed the bill, citing unaddressed issues with farmers' land contributions. The decision ends a long-standing promise since Andhra Pradesh's bifurcation in 2014.
