Tensions Rise: FBI Investigates Cuban Exiles' Shootout
An FBI team has arrived in Cuba to conduct an independent investigation following a deadly shootout involving Cuban exiles and Cuban border patrol. The exiles, armed with firearms and ammunition, attempted to infiltrate Cuba by sea. Tensions between the U.S. and Cuba have escalated since January.
An FBI team arrived in Cuba this week to spearhead an independent investigation into a deadly encounter at sea, the U.S. Embassy in Havana reported. This comes after an incursion by 10 Cuban exiles accused of sparking a deadly shootout with the island's border patrol.
On February 25, the Cuban exiles attempted to breach Cuba's borders via speedboat, carrying an arsenal of firearms and ammunition. The ensuing gunfire resulted in five fatalities among the exiles, while the survivors have been detained by Cuban authorities. They are presently receiving medical treatment.
The U.S. Embassy, while asserting the FBI's commitment to an impartial investigation, expressed the intent to verify Cuba's account of events. Recent developments have heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly after U.S. policy shifts regarding oil supplies to Cuba earlier this year.
