In a major push to prepare its workforce for the digital economy, South Africa has entered into a strategic partnership with Google to equip thousands of students with critical digital and artificial intelligence (AI) skills, aimed at boosting employability and entrepreneurship.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Department of Higher Education and Training and Google South Africa, marking the fourth such public-private initiative led by Deputy Minister Dr Mimmy Gondwe to strengthen youth skills development.

Bridging the Digital Skills Gap

The partnership seeks to address one of South Africa's key challenges—the widening digital skills gap—by expanding access to training across:

  • Public universities

  • Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges

  • Community Education and Training (CET) institutions

"Digital and AI skills are vital for navigating the modern world and securing future employment opportunities," Dr. Gondwe said, emphasizing the need to prepare students—especially those in remote and township areas—for a rapidly evolving job market.

10,000 Scholarships and Workforce Training

A key highlight of the initiative is the rollout of:

  • 10,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships

  • Industry-relevant training programmes in AI, digital tools, and emerging technologies

These programmes aim to enhance job readiness, self-employment, and entrepreneurial capabilities among youth.

Upskilling Educators and Institutions

The partnership goes beyond student training to strengthen the broader education ecosystem:

  • Generative AI training for educators

  • A "train-the-trainer" model to scale knowledge across institutions

  • Collaboration on curriculum development with locally relevant content

  • Access to AI tools and digital learning platforms

This approach ensures that institutions are equipped to deliver future-oriented education sustainably.

Technology and Infrastructure Support

To improve digital access and infrastructure, the agreement includes:

  • Deployment of ChromeOS Flex to upgrade existing hardware

  • Strategic device and IT support

  • Advanced training for institutional IT teams

These measures aim to maximise resource utilisation while expanding digital learning environments.

Policy Collaboration and AI Governance

The MoU also includes collaboration on:

  • AI policy development

  • Governance frameworks for integrating AI in public institutions

This reflects a comprehensive approach combining skills development, infrastructure, and policy alignment.

Economic Impact and Future Potential

Google South Africa Country Director Kabelo Makwane highlighted the transformative economic potential of digital technologies:

  • Google tools contributed R118 billion to South Africa's economy in 2023

  • AI is projected to add R172 billion in economic value
