In a key leadership transition in the Indian Army, Lieutenant General VMB Krishnan has assumed charge as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Eastern Command, one of the most strategically sensitive operational theatres. He succeeds Lieutenant General RC Tiwari, who superannuated on March 31, 2026.

With nearly four decades of distinguished military service, Lt Gen Krishnan brings extensive operational, strategic, and institutional experience to a command responsible for safeguarding India's eastern borders and maintaining stability in a complex security environment.

Extensive Operational Command Experience

Commissioned into the Indian Army on June 11, 1988, Lt Gen Krishnan has held a wide spectrum of command appointments across challenging terrains, particularly in high-altitude and counter-insurgency environments.

His key command roles include:

  • Infantry Battalion and Infantry Brigade in the super high-altitude terrain of Siachen Glacier

  • General Officer Commanding (GOC) of an Infantry Division

  • Commander of the elite Brahmastra Corps, a major strike formation

These assignments reflect his deep operational expertise in both extreme terrain warfare and large-scale military formations.

Strategic and Global Exposure

Lt Gen Krishnan has also held critical staff and diplomatic roles that have shaped his strategic outlook:

  • Director General Information Technology, Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Army)

  • Defence Attaché at the High Commission of India in London

In these roles, he contributed to technology integration, defence diplomacy, and international military cooperation.

Driving Reforms in Logistics and Infrastructure

Prior to taking over Eastern Command, Lt Gen Krishnan served as the Quarter Master General (QMG) at Army Headquarters, where he led significant reforms in:

  • Supply chain management

  • Logistics modernization

  • Infrastructure development

These initiatives enhanced operational sustenance and combat readiness, particularly in forward and remote areas.

Leadership in Training and Regimental Roles

The General Officer holds prestigious regimental and training appointments:

  • Colonel of The Dogra Regiment and Dogra Scouts

  • Former Commandant of the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School (CIJWS)

During his tenure at CIJWS, he set high standards in specialised training and doctrinal development, strengthening the Army's counter-insurgency capabilities.

Commanding a Strategic Eastern Theatre

Eastern Command plays a vital role in India's defence architecture, overseeing:

  • Borders with China, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan

  • Sensitive mountainous and insurgency-prone regions

  • Critical infrastructure and connectivity corridors

Upon assuming command, Lt Gen Krishnan paid homage to fallen soldiers and outlined his priorities:
