A Government Railway Police constable, Akash Singh, lost both his legs after an encounter with a moving train while pursuing a suspect at the Gonda Junction railway station, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The incident took place around midnight on Tuesday when Singh, 29, apprehended Sunil Kumar, 35, on allegations of assault and theft. As he escorted Kumar for questioning, the suspect fled, attempting to board the Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express train. In a daring chase, Singh successfully pulled the suspect down from the train, but unfortunately fell under it himself, resulting in the loss of both his legs.

The injured constable received immediate medical attention and is currently in critical condition at the Lucknow Trauma Centre. Meanwhile, GRP officials have rallied support, urging personnel to donate part of their salaries for Singh's medical expenses.
