Supreme Court Halts Proceedings in High-Profile Corruption Case

The Supreme Court has intervened in a significant political case, granting a stay on trial-court proceedings against Tamil Nadu minister and DMK general secretary Durai Murugan. The case revolves around alleged disproportionate assets.

A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan issued the stay and a notice to the Tamil Nadu government. This comes after Murugan challenged a prior decision by the Madras High Court, which had directed charges to be framed against him and his family by a special court.

The case centers on allegations that Murugan, while handling the Public Works Department between 1996 and 2001, amassed Rs 3.92 crore in assets beyond his known income. Murugan’s appeal is scheduled for an April 20 hearing.
