Supreme Court Pushes for Inclusive Cab Services for Disabled

On Friday, the Supreme Court highlighted the urgency of making cab services more accessible to individuals with disabilities. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta disclosed this during a hearing focused on improving transportation access for disabled persons.

The bench suggested that cabs should be able to accommodate wheelchairs and other assistive devices. They further proposed designating specific cabs for such purposes, accessible through app modifications. This move, they argued, would significantly aid individuals using automated wheelchairs, particularly in larger metropolitan areas.

The court acknowledged the limitations faced due to CNG-equipped cabs and invited the counsel to consider a European-style universal design. A committee had already been appointed to examine related issues raised in a separate petition, and further hearings are scheduled for March 24.
