A tragic incident unfolded in Vienna's upmarket ninth district as scaffolding collapsed at a residential construction site, resulting in four fatalities, a police spokesperson announced on Tuesday.

The cause of the collapse remains unclear, with details of the work being done still under investigation. The afflicted building, reminiscent of the area's characteristic 19th-century architecture, became a somber scene of disaster.

Located on Porzellangasse, near the city's French school and Palais Liechtenstein, the collapse also seriously injured a man. Police efforts to determine the incident's cause include gathering testimonies from witnesses and surviving construction workers.
