A Stark Military Divide: Comparing Pakistan and Afghanistan

Rising tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have brought attention to the significant contrast in their military capabilities. This week, the Afghan Taliban government accused Pakistan of attacking a drug rehabilitation center, allegedly resulting in over 400 casualties, a charge that Islamabad vigorously denies.

In Pakistan, government investment has heavily bolstered its military capabilities, developing a nuclear program and modernizing all branches with assistance from China, its primary defense partner. Conversely, Afghanistan's military efforts are hampered by the Afghan Taliban government's lack of international recognition, limiting its access to essential parts, expertise, and maintenance.

Pakistan's military strength is evident with 660,000 active personnel and a vast array of armored fighting vehicles and artillery. Meanwhile, the Afghan military, comprising around 150,000 personnel, lacks comparable air power and nuclear capabilities, as it struggles to maintain its equipment due to longstanding international isolation.
