The Gujarat government moves closer to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as a specially designated committee submitted its comprehensive report to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the committee has proposed a unified legal framework addressing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption across all communities. This move emphasizes the priority of equal rights for women, according to a statement by the state.
The proposed UCC draft bill is expected to be tabled in the legislative assembly soon, with the last budget session day tentatively set for March 25. Despite consultations with various groups, including 38 Muslim organizations, the proposal has sparked protests in some communities.
