In a landmark ruling on Tuesday, a special court sentenced five individuals to five years in prison for their role in the 2016 Una flogging case, where four Dalit men were brutally beaten while carrying out their traditional profession of skinning a cow carcass.

The court, presided over by Judge JJ Pandya, also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each convict and detailed their sentence under multiple sections of the law. The incident, which occurred in Mota Samadhiyala village, had ignited widespread protests nationwide.

This verdict arrives a day after the court in Veraval convicted these individuals while acquitting 35 others. The sentences, including punishment under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code, will run concurrently to ensure justice for the victims.
