The Congress Party is pressing the government to convene an all-party meeting to deliberate on potential amendments to the Women's Reservation Act. Concerns are rising over the prospect of 'divide and rule' tactics in implementing changes.
While no formal proposal has reached the Union Cabinet yet, sources indicate that the government is assessing strategies to enact the law before the post-Census delimitation of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies is completed. This move might necessitate another amendment to the Constitution.
Unofficially, opposition leaders have been approached to discuss the feasibility of incorporating the women's quota without the delimitation exercise. The Congress reiterated its stance, as stated by its general secretary in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh, emphasizing the need for collective and transparent decision-making.
