The Union Cabinet has sanctioned the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028, significantly enhancing the budget to Rs 8.7 lakh crore, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced.
Initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, the mission endeavors to ensure safe and sufficient drinking water to all rural households via tap connections.
The approved restructuring emphasizes transitioning from infrastructure creation to actual service delivery, bolstered by improved governance and a robust institutional ecosystem, including a national digital framework known as 'Sujalam Bharat' for efficient water supply mapping.
