UN Defies South Sudan’s Evacuation Order Amid Tensions in Akobo

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan announced it will not adhere to the government's demand to vacate its base in Akobo, a site near the Ethiopian border housing tens of thousands of refugees. Despite warnings of a government offensive, the UN cited the need for a protective presence for civilians.

Tensions have risen since opposition forces seized territories in northern Jonglei, displacing over 280,000 people. This week, fears of renewed conflict led humanitarian workers to evacuate, with the population following suit amid scarcity of essential supplies.

Health workers and international organizations voiced concerns about the crisis. Hospitals face staffing shortages, and aid offices were looted. The US, UK, and Norway have urged the South Sudanese government to retract its evacuation orders to prevent further civilian suffering.
