In a troubling development, Turkish authorities detained Alican Uludag, a seasoned correspondent for Deutsche Welle, in Ankara on Thursday. The charges against him include disseminating misleading information and insulting the president, accusations stemming from his social media activity.
Uludag, who has a long standing tenure with the German state-backed broadcaster, was transferred to Istanbul following his arrest. Deutsche Welle has fiercely criticized the charges as baseless, interpreting the move as an intimidation tactic against journalists, according to DW Director General Barbara Massing.
The broadcaster explained that the allegations relate to Uludag's social media criticism of Turkish government actions concerning the release of suspected Islamic State militants. Authorities also conducted a search of his apartment, confiscating IT equipment. The case adds to ongoing concerns about press freedom under the current Turkish administration.
