In a shocking case of online matrimony gone wrong, police in Surat arrested a man accused of extorting Rs 60 lakh and gold ornaments from his US-based wife. The two had an online marriage after meeting when she ordered clothes from his store.
Officials revealed that Aijaz Patel allegedly took possession of his wife’s flat in Hyderabad and pressured her to take him to the United States. Unable to secure a visa, he allegedly resorted to blackmailing her, transferring a significant sum of money to his account via WhatsApp and email.
The victim's brother filed a complaint, citing instances where Patel demanded money and gold, which were never returned. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with further investigations underway.
