In a decisive move, the Australian government has prohibited an alleged Islamic State affiliate from returning to Australia from a Syrian detention camp. This individual is part of a group of women and children turned back to the Roj camp due to procedural snags.
Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced the ban, stating it was recommended by security agencies. The temporary exclusion order applies to one member of the group initially attempting to fly from Damascus. Burke clarified that no other individuals in this group have met the security criteria for similar bans.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated his government's policy against aiding the repatriation of individuals tied to extremist ideologies. Albanese expressed regret over the involvement of children but attributed their situation to their parents' choices.
