On Saturday, five European countries accused Russia of poisoning opposition leader Alexei Navalny with a toxin derived from dart frogs. Analyzing samples, the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands confirmed the presence of epibatidine, a highly lethal toxin, marking a stark accusation against Russia.
The foreign ministries released a joint statement that emphasized Russia's capability and probable motive in using such poison. This accusation has prompted a report against Russia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, citing a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
Navalny, who had long challenged President Vladimir Putin’s regime, died in a penal colony in 2024 while serving a politically charged sentence. His wife, Yulia Navalnaya, alleged poisoning months before his death, aligning with findings from independent laboratories.
