The Crime Branch of Kanpur Police has successfully apprehended Sumit Kesarwani, a medical store operator involved in an illegal supply network of codeine-laced cough syrup. Officials announced on Saturday that Kesarwani, who was carrying a reward of Rs 25,000, had been a fugitive since a case against him emerged last year.

Kesarwani was reportedly caught after consistent police surveillance. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Shravan Kumar Singh, the illicit operation surfaced on October 12 last year during a drug inspection at Balaji Medical Store. Authorities seized a significant quantity of codeine-based syrup and alprazolam tablets found without proper documentation.

The investigation revealed that Kesarwani illegally procured and distributed large amounts of these drugs to around 74 medical stores. Sourced from a Lucknow firm, the syrup was sold at inflated prices to cater to drug addicts. Kesarwani's arrest marks a significant breakthrough as investigations continue.
