Yumnam Khemchand Singh, sworn in as Manipur's Chief Minister, highlighted the urgent need for unity in the state assembly to tackle the ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

In his speech, Singh emphasized that ensuring peace is a shared responsibility among all citizens, urging both elected representatives and the public to help bridge trust deficits and facilitate the return of those displaced by the conflict.

Since violence broke out in May 2023 over the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, over 260 lives have been lost and many rendered homeless. Singh praised opposition MLAs for supporting efforts to restore normalcy.
