Late on Tuesday, Estonia's Tax and Customs Board announced the detention of a container ship sailing under the Bahamian flag within Estonia's internal waters. Authorities suspect the ship is linked to smuggling operations from Ecuador.
The vessel was on a course from Ecuador to St. Petersburg, Russia. Despite suspicions of its involvement in illicit activity, the ship is not associated with the Russian shadow fleet, according to official statements.
Further emphasizing the ship's standing, authorities confirmed it does not fall under any European Union sanctions. The investigation continues as officials examine the legality of the ship's operations.
