The Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, today inaugurated the 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Crafts Mela at Faridabad, Haryana, marking the start of one of India's most prominent celebrations of traditional crafts, cultural diversity and self-reliance.

The internationally acclaimed fair brings together artisans, craftspeople and cultural practitioners from across India and more than 30 countries, showcasing India's rich artistic heritage and reinforcing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

A Living Symbol of India's Cultural Soul

Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President described the Surajkund Mela as a living symbol of India's cultural soul, artistic excellence and civilisational continuity, nurtured over four decades. He said the global participation at the Mela reflects India's timeless philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.

Highlighting the importance of the Atmanirbhar Bharat theme, he noted that artisans are custodians of centuries-old traditions, and empowering them is central to building an inclusive, sustainable and self-reliant economy. He pointed to initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana, which are strengthening the handicrafts ecosystem through skill development, market access and economic support.

He also warmly welcomed Egypt, the partner country for this year's Mela, noting the deep resonance between the ancient civilisations of India and Egypt. After visiting the Egypt Pavilion, he praised its artistic excellence and underscored the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening people-to-people ties.
