The United Nations human rights chief has condemned US military airstrikes on vessels purportedly carrying illegal narcotics from South America. Labeling the actions as 'unacceptable,' the official urged an immediate cessation of the attacks.
President Donald Trump has defended these airstrikes as crucial to stopping the influx of drugs into the United States. Volker Turk, the rights chief, has called for a thorough investigation, highlighting that over 60 individuals have been reported killed in recent strikes.
Speaking at a UN briefing in Geneva, spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani stated the attacks violate international human rights law. She emphasized that the battle against drug trafficking should remain a law-enforcement issue, governed by stringent limitations on the use of lethal force.
