In a bid to curb jealousy and domestic discord, a panchayat in the Jaunsar Scheduled Tribe area has instituted a rule barring women from wearing more than three pieces of jewellery. This stricture allows women to wear only a nose ring, earrings, and a mangalsutra during weddings, and violators face a hefty Rs 50,000 fine.

Arjun Singh, the prominent figure in Kandhar village, explained that the high price of gold often pressures women into buying more, leading to familial conflicts and financial burdens. While the decision has received a generally positive response, it has also raised issues of gender equality.

Local women have voiced their concerns, questioning why only their jewellery is targeted while men continue to indulge in branded liquor and other luxury expenses. The panchayat, acknowledging these criticisms, promises to consider broader restrictions in a phased manner.
