India's Progress in Combating Sex-Based Discrimination: A Step Towards Gender Equality

India is making significant strides in reducing sex-based discrimination, with recent data indicating a rise in the sex ratio at birth (SRB) in 12 states above the national average of 917, Union Health Minister J P Nadda announced on Tuesday.
At the 31st Central Supervisory Board (CSB) meeting, Nadda reviewed the enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PC and PNDT) Act, highlighting its role in fighting sex determination misuse. He celebrated the 2021-23 Sample Registration Survey's findings of a climbing SRB from 899 in 2016-18 to 917 in 2021-23.
The minister also praised proactive states for aggressive strategies like sting operations to curb gender-biased sex selection. Additionally, Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava commended collective efforts to promote women and children's welfare, and Minister of State Savitri Thakur called for an end to gender biases.
