Foiled Assassination Plot of Iranian Journalist
Two Russian mobsters are facing sentencing for a failed plan to assassinate Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad. Prosecutors seek 55-year sentences for the convicted men, linked to the Russian mob. Alinejad, targeted due to her activism, continues to receive threats, prompting ongoing investigations.
A chilling assassination plot against Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad was nearly executed, according to prosecutors in a Manhattan federal court. Two purported Russian mobsters, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, face up to 55 years in prison for their involvement in the plan.
The plot was meant to silence Alinejad, a prominent critic of the Iranian regime, for her advocacy work. She has campaigned for Iranian women's freedom and criticized the government's oppressive policies. The plot culminated in a USD 500,000 bounty offered by Iranian intelligence, seeking to eliminate her after previous intimidation attempts failed.
Prosecutors emphasized the diligence of law enforcement in thwarting the assassination and highlighted the ongoing threat to Alinejad's life. As investigations continue, she has been forced to relocate multiple times for her safety, demonstrating the persistent risk she faces.
