Failed Plot Exposes Tehran-Backed Assassination Attempt on Iranian Dissident

In a significant ruling on Wednesday, two men, Rafat Amirov and Polad Omarov, were each sentenced to 25 years in prison for their involvement in a failed murder-for-hire plot against Iranian dissident Masih Alinejad. The sentencing took place in Manhattan's U.S. District Court.

The plot, allegedly backed financially by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeted Alinejad, a vocal critic of Tehran's policies, particularly its treatment of women and head-covering laws. The men were convicted of multiple charges, including attempted murder and conspiracy, for their roles in the 2022 plot.

While the court's decision fell short of the prosecutors' request for 55-year sentences, it exceeded the defense's recommendation. Alinejad, with a strong support network present, emphasized her resilience despite the threats, stating her resolve to maintain her advocacy efforts for women's rights.
