Border Tensions Rise: Lithuania Closes Belarus Crossings Amid Smuggler Threat

Lithuania's government has announced its borders with Belarus will remain closed until at least the end of November, citing security threats posed by smuggler-operated balloons. These balloons have disrupted Lithuanian airspace repeatedly, prompting stringent measures from the Baltic state.

Belarus criticized the border closure, labeling it a "thoughtless and unfriendly policy" that potentially harms business partnerships in the region. Incidents involving balloons, used to smuggle cigarettes, have led to multiple airport shutdowns and arrests of suspected smugglers in Lithuania.

In response to these incidents, Lithuanian authorities have announced plans to shoot down the balloons as necessary. While the closure affects travelers, exemptions are in place for diplomats, EU and NATO citizens, and those with humanitarian visas from Lithuania.
