The Delhi Police has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against narcotics by dismantling an international drug cartel that spanned India, Thailand, and the UAE. Officers arrested Rohit Kumar Sharma, a former inspector with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, during an operation in Janakpuri, South-West Delhi.

Police seized over 21 kilograms of high-grade hydroponic marijuana—popular for its high THC content and valued at Rs 27 crore—along with Rs 44.42 lakh in cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales. The investigation revealed that Sharma exploited his previous Customs Department contacts to facilitate drug smuggling.

Sharma, who was dismissed from his governmental role in 2023 after a gold smuggling conviction, allegedly conspired with a partner, Abhishek, to channel marijuana into India from Thailand. The syndicate used low-footfall airports and laundered drug profits through hawala and cryptocurrency to Dubai. Police are now working to identify other members of this extensive network.
