India is preparing to dispatch an airplane to bring back 500 of its citizens who crossed into Thailand, fleeing a military operation on a notorious cybercrime hub in Myanmar, according to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Myanmar's military, starting last week, began a crackdown on the KK Park compound, known internationally for its cyberscam activities, causing a substantial migration of mainly foreign workers into Thailand's border town, Mae Sot.
Thai authorities have reported that over 1,500 people from 28 different countries have sought refuge in Thailand. The Indian ambassador is scheduled to meet with the immigration head to expedite verification for the 500 Indian nationals for their return flight.
The effort exemplifies India's responsive measures, as earlier efforts led to the repatriation of nationals trapped in cyberscam centers following regional crackdowns. The notorious compounds, particularly KK Park, are operated by Chinese criminal syndicates and local militias aligned with Myanmar's military.
Regions bordering Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia have emerged as centers for online fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations has highlighted that billions have been generated from trafficking and forced labor in these cybercriminal hubs.
