China and ASEAN Solidify Trade Ties Amid Global Tensions
China and ASEAN have signed an upgraded free trade agreement focusing on digital and green economies, amid ongoing tensions with the U.S. over tariffs. The deal seeks to enhance market access and regional cooperation, while maritime disputes in the South China Sea remain a diplomatic challenge.
China and the ASEAN bloc have fortified their economic ties by signing an advanced free trade agreement, covering sectors such as the digital and green economies. The agreement is being lauded for its potential to reduce trade barriers and boost regional cooperation.
This development comes as China positions itself as a proponent of open trade, countering U.S. tariff measures under the Trump administration. With a total trade of $771 billion last year, ASEAN is China’s largest trading partner, and the new deal aims to further strengthen industrial integration.
However, geopolitical tensions persist, particularly over China's territorial claims in the South China Sea, where President Marcos of the Philippines has raised concerns. Despite these challenges, China remains committed to regional economic alignment and strategic trust-building.
