In a significant development, two senior leaders of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) surrendered to the authorities in Telangana on Tuesday, marking a notable victory for the state's counter-insurgency strategy.
P Prasad Rao, a Central Committee Member who had been underground for 45 years, and Bandi Prakash of the Telangana State Committee, who evaded capture for 42 years, have emerged from hiding. Their decision followed an appeal by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy urging Maoists to renounce violence and join mainstream society.
The police attribute their surrender to deteriorating health and internal conflicts within the Maoist leadership. The state's concerted efforts to erode the group's influence have led to 427 members surrendering this year. These latest defections are seen as a testament to the effectiveness of Telangana's rehabilitation and reintegration programs.
