The Election Commission asserted its role and underscored state obligations in ensuring the smooth execution of a special intensive revision of voters' lists in states including West Bengal. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar dismissed concerns, citing constitutional duties of both the commission and state governments.
The announcement came as the poll panel revealed plans for phase two of its electoral roll revision in 12 states and Union Territories, scheduled between November and February. These regions include Kerala, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh among others.
Kumar addressed apprehensions of procedural hurdles, emphasizing the constitutional mandate for states to support the process, dismissing requests to delay the revision in Kerala due to local body elections. He affirmed the electoral body's authority under Article 324, highlighting states' responsibilities in maintaining order during such exercises.
