Nnamdi Kanu's Trial: Legal Hurdles and Delays
The terrorism trial of Nigerian separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu has been postponed to October 27 due to issues with accessing his case file after his legal team was dismissed. Kanu cited difficulties in preparing his defense as he had not received his documents. The court has permitted weekend visits to assist in preparation.
The terrorism trial for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra movement, was adjourned on Friday. Citing the inability to access his case file after his legal team's dismissal, Kanu failed to present his defense for the second consecutive day.
Kanu informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the lack of key case documents hindered his ability to proceed. He emphasized that former lawyers had not transferred his case file. Additionally, he requested visitor access to prepare his defense, expecting witnesses from several countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, the UK, and the US.
Justice James Omotosho granted Kanu's request to receive weekend visitors and set the trial to resume on October 27. The court reiterated that the six days allocated for Kanu's defense would not be extended. Kanu faces charges linked to his campaign for southeastern Nigeria's secession, a charge he firmly denies.
