The European Union on Friday accused Meta and TikTok of violating transparency rules set out in the Digital Services Act, which could result in billions of dollars in fines.
The investigation revealed that both companies did not adequately ensure that user data was accessible to researchers, a critical transparency requirement under the act. Moreover, Meta's platforms, Instagram and Facebook, failed to enable users to flag illegal content easily.
TikTok has expressed concerns about conflicting EU regulations, while Meta denies the findings. The EU may impose fines of up to 6% of annual profits if compliance is not met.
