The Kerala government-backed proposal to set up a liquor plant in Elappully is stirring controversy, as local panchayat leaders vow to oppose the project. Many residents, including political affiliates, participated in grama sabhas to sign resolutions against the plant, arguing it threatens the local environment and agriculture.
Local Self Government and Excise Minister M B Rajesh emphasized that the project has state cabinet approval and will proceed if it meets legal requirements. Despite objections, the minister clarified that panchayats remain under state law and must comply with governmental decisions.
Panchayat president Revathi Babu expressed firm opposition, highlighting community concerns and ongoing legal efforts to halt the proposal. The state's previous rejection of land conversion for the project underscores the heightened tensions surrounding its potential establishment.
