The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has assumed responsibility for safeguarding the Bhakra Dam, located at Nangal in Punjab, amid concerns of possible sabotage and terrorist threats. This strategic development was marked at a ceremony attended by CISF and Bhakra Beas Management Board officials.
The Union Home Ministry sanctioned the deployment of 296 armed personnel to ensure the security of this critical infrastructure along the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border. The dam is the second-tallest in Asia and holds the position of India's second-largest reservoir, highlighting its importance.
Despite the central mandate, the Punjab assembly previously expressed unanimous opposition to the CISF's deployment, indicating regional discontent and political contention surrounding the move.
