U.S. Marine Live-Fire Mishap Over California Highway Sparks Investigation

The U.S. Marines have launched an investigation after a live artillery exercise over a major California highway ended in a mishap. During a ceremonial event at Camp Pendleton, a shell exploded mid-air, scattering shrapnel onto police vehicles stationed nearby, according to officials.

Vice President JD Vance was in attendance at the Saturday event, which marked the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps when the incident occurred. Although there were no injuries, California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the display, blaming the Trump administration for a "reckless" show of force.

The California Highway Patrol had closed a 17-mile stretch of Interstate 5 ahead of the exercise, yet a patrol car and motorcycle were hit by debris when a shell detonated prematurely. The Marines ceased firing after the incident, and a U.S. official confirmed an ongoing investigation.
