Fast-Tracked Future: Medicare Speeds Up Device Coverage

In a groundbreaking move, U.S. health regulators unveiled a new initiative on Thursday aimed at accelerating Medicare coverage for high-risk medical devices. The program, known as RAPID, promises to cut down waiting times for reimbursement from over a year to as little as two months.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will streamline processes for FDA-designated Class II and Class III breakthrough devices. This initiative targets devices such as artificial heart valves and nerve-stimulating implants, seeking to reduce delays between regulatory approval and payment.

Industry giants including Medtronic and Johnson & Johnson support the program, which they believe will enhance their investment in innovative medical technologies. By providing a more predictable pathway, the initiative aims to improve patient access to advanced treatments for complex health conditions.
