Impact of the 988 Hotline: Lower Suicide Rates Among Young Americans
A nationwide Harvard study indicates a significant drop in suicide rates among young Americans following the introduction of the 988 suicide-prevention hotline. Between July 2022 and December 2024, suicide deaths among the youth were 11% lower than projected. Researchers attributed this to the simplified access of the three-digit hotline.
A Harvard study has revealed a notable decline in suicide rates among younger Americans following the establishment of the national 988 suicide-prevention hotline. The research indicates that from July 2022 to December 2024, suicide deaths among individuals aged 15-34 decreased by 11% compared to projections.
The simplified three-digit hotline has increased accessibility, significantly expanding the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline's reach. Since the launch in 2022, overall contacts more than doubled, spurred by investments totaling $1.5 billion to enhance crisis-center capacity across the U.S.
Despite these improvements, researchers emphasize the necessity of sustained funding to maintain and expand services. The study also notes the recent discontinuation of a specialized 988 service for young LGBTQ adults, potentially reducing hotline usage among this group.
